  15.      LANGUAGE TEACHER is a series of menu-driven language tutorial programs 
  16. designed to be run on the IBM PC/XT/AT/jr or any compatible clone. Each 
  17. program in the series contains hundreds of word combinations and verb 
  18. conjugation forms. A line printer can be used with LANGUAGE TEACHER to take 
  19. advantage of its versatility.  
  20.  
  21.      Also included is the capability to select language-to-English or 
  22. English-to-language combinations, choose multiple choice answers, be 
  23. retested on misses, print a multiple choice test, and to run a full quiz 
  24. diagnostic routine with line printer output. Of particular interest to non-
  25. English students is the capability to select the direction of the 
  26. combinations.

  28.      All words, phrases, and verb conjugations are selected randomly by the 
  29. program; the user being unable to predict what the next selection will be. 
  30. The program package is not designed to teach conversational skills or 
  31. pronunciation but, instead, to provide practice drills in order to increase 
  32. your working vocabulary and to perfect your use of the conjugation forms.  
  33.  
  34.      The LANGUAGE TEACHER series was originally published by Acorn Software 
  35. Products, Inc. of Washington, DC. Since then, the company has gone out of 
  36. business and the authors are releasing the series to the Sharware market. In 
  37. order to receive any support for the series, or notices of future updates, 
  38. you must register the package(s) you are using (see the registration form at 
  39. the end of these instructions).

  42. PROGRAM SPECIFICATIONS:
  43.  
  44.      Minimum system configuration: LANGUAGE TEACHER is written in BASIC and 
  45. compiled with Borland International's Turbo BASIC compiler. The program 
  46. requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM, one disk drive (or a hard disk) and 
  47. a suitable high resolution monitor. Preferred monitors are the IBM Monochrome 
  48. Display attached to the IBM Monochrome Display and Printer Adapter or a green 
  49. screen or "direct drive" RGB/EGA/etc. monitor attached to the appropriate 
  50. monitor adapter. In most cases, only a high quality color monitor or green 
  51. screen will provide the resolution necessary to display the special 
  52. characters used with LANGUAGE TEACHER. All other program functions will be 
  53. suitable, though, if a low quality color composite monitor is used.

  55.      Optional equipment includes an 80 column line printer.

  58. BULLETIN BOARD VERSIONS VS. REGISTERED VERSIONS:

  60.      Copies of the Language Teacher Series that appear on Bulletin Boards 
  61. have the following limitations:

  63.      1. There are a limited number of data files supplied with the program. 
  64.         See the table below for a listing of the data files that appear in 
  65.         each ZIP archive.
  66.  
  67.      2. The editing of the data files, the modify random selection timing
  68.         defaults, and the modify type of printer options are not active.
  69.  
  70. The registered versions of the Series contain a full set of data files and 
  71. have all applicable options active.

  133. LOADING INSTRUCTIONS:
  134.  
  135.      Power up your system the way you normally would, with either your 
  136. Language Teacher diskette in disk drive "A", or the Language Teacher package 
  137. loaded on your hard disk. At your normal DOS prompt, enter either TEACHER /M, 
  138. if you are using a non-color monitor, or TEACHER, if you are using a color 
  139. monitor (note that the default selection is color, if no modifier is added). 
  140. Language Teacher users running the program from the menu given to registered 
  141. users should follow the instructions supplied with the special menu.  NOTE: 
  142. The previous instructions assume your have unZIPed the applicable file
  143. using one of the popular unZIPing programs.
  144.  
  145.  
  146. SPECIAL CHARACTER SET:
  147.  
  148.      LANGUAGE TEACHER utilizes the keyboard function keys to represent the 
  149. special characters used in the language. These keys are active only when a 
  150. non-multiple choice drill is selected, in which you must spell out the exact 
  151. answer. The 25th line of the screen will display which function key is 
  152. associated with which foreign character.  
  153.  
  154.      NOTE: Due to the inability of some line printers to be able to 
  155. recognize these special characters, there is a main menu option that allows 
  156. you to toggle the conversion of these special characters to their "normal" 
  157. letters before being output to the line printer. Once you have obtained your 
  158. printout, insert the special marks by hand. The default condition is to 
  159. recognize an IBM compatible printer.
  160.  
  161.  
  162. MISCELLANEOUS:
  163.  
  164.      If a multiple choice type quiz has been selected, you will only be 
  165. given 15 seconds (25 seconds for verb conjugation) to input your answer. If 
  166. the time expires before you make your choice, you will be credited with an 
  167. incorrect answer. NOTE that these are the default values for the program. 
  168. These default values can be changed at any time via a main menu option. 
  169.  
  170.      If you have not chosen a multiple choice type of quiz, you will have to 
  171. type in the exact answer. In the case of being quizzed with a noun, you must 
  172. also type in the definite article ("the") that proceeds the noun.  
  173.  
  174.      If your original option was the verb conjugation drill, no retesting 
  175. can be performed. Also, the diagnostic display will let you know how many of 
  176. each person and tense you missed. If you missed more than 3 of any 
  177. person/tense, an "*" is displayed beside the applicable person/tense, 
  178. indicating you need more practice.  
  179.

  181. EXTRA GOODIES:
  182.  
  183.      All users who register their program(s) will receive a free copy of a 
  184. Hard Disk menu system that will enable you to run multiple Language Teacher
  185. programs from a DOS menu written in Turbo Pascal and compiled with Borland 
  186. International's Turbo Pascal Compiler. This program will allow you to switch 
  187. between any of the Language Teacher programs (up to 7) at the touch of a 
  188. key. The menu program will be customized to your specific Language Teacher 
  189. application(s). Remember, this program is only available to registered 
  190. users. 
  191.  
  192. NOTE: The hard disk menu system will NOT work with DOS versions below 3.0.
  193.       If you do not have access to DOS 3.0 or above, notify us so that an
  194.       alternative method of running your Language Teacher program can be 
  195.       provided.

  197.  
  198. FILE EDITING CAPABILITY:
  199.  
  200.      Now, with version 2.x of the Language Series, you have the capability 
  201. to edit any of the vocabulary or phrase files. The editing functions are 
  202. selectable from the main menu. With this feature, you can create your own word
  203. lists. You cannot create any additional lists, but you can modify the 
  204. existing data to add new items. Note that, due to the complexity of the verb 
  205. conjugation files, the capability to edit them has not been included.

  208. VOCABULARY WORD LOOKUP:
  209.  
  210.      With version 2.3, an option has been added to allow you to use your
  211. Language Teacher program like an English/Language dictionary. When choosing 
  212. this option, you will be prompted for English-to-Language or Language-to-
  213. English. NOTE that if you enter a foreign language word, the definite article 
  214. must also be supplied.  This is in keeping with the importance of the 
  215. definite article in most foreign languages.  
  216.      If you have a registered version of the program and are using the 
  217. Language Teacher hard disk menu system with both Language 1 and Language 2, 
  218. both Language subdirectory data bases will be searched for a vocabulary 
  219. match.

  222. ADDITIONAL NOTES:
  223.  
  224.      The extent of the vocabulary of each program is given below. Since the 
  225. program randomly selects from its contents in each option, you truly have a 
  226. thorough drill in each language!  
  227.  
  228.      SPANISH I: 750 Spanish/English word combinations, 1488 verb conjugations
  229. and 150 Spanish/English phrase combinations.  
  230.  
  231.      SPANISH II: 800 Spanish/English word combinations and 2108 verb 
  232. conjugation forms.
  233.  
  234.      FRENCH I: 784 French/English word combinations, 1600 verb conjugations 
  235. and 196 French/English phrase combinations.
  236.  
  237.      FRENCH II: 864 French/English word combinations and 1600 verb 
  238. conjugation forms.
  239.  
  240.      GERMAN I: 800 German/English word combinations, 1860 verb conjugations 
  241. and 160 German/English phrase combinations.
  242.  
  243.      GERMAN II: 800 German/English word combinations and 2015 verb 
  244. conjugation forms.
  245.  
  246.      ITALIAN I: 816 Italian/English word combinations, 1500 verb conjugations 
  247. and 114 Italian/English phrase combinations.

  250. REVISION HISTORY:
  251.  
  252. 1.x  -  Original version(s) of the Language Teacher series.
  253.  
  254. 2.0  -  Series made compatible with and compiled with Borland International's 
  255.         Basic compiler. Now supplying two versions of the programs: one for 
  256.         use with non-color systems, and one for use with color systems.
  257.         Incorporated fixes to all known bugs. Incorporated all sensible
  258.         suggestions. Also added a Hard Disk menu system for registered users.
  259.         Added the capability to edit vocabulary and phrase files.
  260.  
  261. 2.1  -  * Color and monochrome versions combined into one program, with the
  262.           default being the color version. The monochrome version is selected
  263.           by adding the command line parameter /M when loading the program.
  264.         * Fixed a bug in which special characters (entered by using the Alt
  265.           key and the keypad) could not be entered. This was actually a bug in
  266.           the version 1.0 of the Borland Basic compiler, and not a program
  267.           bug. Version 1.1 of the Borland Basic compiler was used to compile
  268.           version 2.1 of the Series.
  269.         * Fixed a bug in which editing a phrase containing a comma (,) would
  270.           cause the system to crash.
  271.         * Fixed a problem in which the System Clock was used to time the
  272.           Multiple Choice option. This caused the System Clock to be incorrect
  273.           upon exiting from the program. Internal program timing now solves
  274.           this problem.
  275.         * In conjunction with solving the previous problem, a new option has
  276.           been added to the Main Menu to allow the user to manually set the
  277.           amount of time allowed to make a multiple choice entry.
  278.         * Made the program compatible with the IBM PCjr. Previous versions 
  279.           did not work due to the setting of the border colors via "normal"
  280.           IBM ports. If the use of a PCjr is detected, the border colors
  281.           remain unaltered.
  282.         * Added a new main menu option to be able to select between an IBM 
  283.           compatible printer that can display the IBM extended character set 
  284.           and one that can't.
  285.  
  286. 2.2  -  Version produced for registered owners only. Version incorporates
  287.         better "handshaking" with new version 2.2 of registered owner hard
  288.         disk menu system. No technical or cosmetic changes made to main
  289.         program coding.
  290.       
  291. 2.21 -  Minor fix to correct problem in which program did not recognize the
  292.         IBM compatible printer condition.
  293.  
  294. 2.3  -  Added new menu option in which you can use the program like a 
  295.         dictionary. Vocabulary words can be entered and an equivalent match 
  296.         will be searched for.
